2021 was a massive year for Ottawa-based, Indigenous band Twin Flames, collecting three awards at the recent inaugural Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards. This husband-wife duo is made up of Jaaji (Inuk and Mohawk)and Chelsey June (Algonquin Cree métis).
Since coming together, both professionally and personally, Twin Flames Music have released three full-length albums; Jajii and Chelsey June – 2015, Signal Fire – 2017 and Omen – 2020, and have been nominated for 29 music awards both nationally and abroad.
Twin Flames have scored two number 1 Hits on the Indigenous Music Countdown’s Top 40 and have played more than 1,000 shows throughout Canada, Greenland, the United States, Australia, France and the Cayman Islands. They were selected as artist-in-residence for the 2019 Folk Alliance International conference and partnered with UNESCO to write “Human” the official song to celebrate 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages which reached #1 on the Indigenous music countdown.
Bridging the cultural gap, Twin Flames, unifies their rich personal history and musical experience. Written in English, Inuttitut, and French, their songs share stories of survival and courage with their listeners. They have become a beloved powerhouse couple, as public figures, offering seminars and workshops regarding Social Awareness and Alternative Measures to healthy living. Through honouring their ancestor’s history and representing their Indigenous backgrounds, they will, without a doubt, become a household name.
Not only are they musicians, but they are also soon to be published authors, working on children’s books. Before being full time musicians, Jaaji was a Police officer in Quaqtaq an Kuujjuaq, Nunavik where he served for 12 years, and Chelsey June was an Executive Assistant for Indigenous and Northern Affairs.
We started working with Jaaji and Chelsey June in the early years of when they were transitioning into focusing only on music. We work with many musicians who have full time non-music careers working towards becoming musicians full time, and the story of Twin Flames is an inspiring story for people dreaming about that change.
